Preparations

Before you start with the practical work, be sure that you have provided everything that you will need. A few different screwdrivers, couple of screws, hammer, measurement tools, drill and a bit of good will and patience. First, take a good look whether the whole doors need to be replaced along with the frame, or just the door itself. If the frame looks unstable or rotten, consider calling the carpenter, for that is quite a bit of a work, and requires a professional touch.

On the other hand, if you are lucky, and just the door need to be replaced, carry on by removing the door hinges. You can easily do this by placing thin bladed screwdriver beneath hinges and steadily, with a hammer, without using too much force, tap out the wedge. Repeat this procedure with the rest of the hinges. It is advised that you have a helping hand here, for the door can fall down and hurt you.

Replacement

Take the old door on a place where you are planned to do all the works. Garage is advised, for there will be a lot of scrap material and woodchips, and you don’t want to make a mess in your house. Put new doors atop the old one, and where the hinges were, mark that position. It is good advice that in order to keep the doors tight, you secure them with a couple of clamps, so they won’t move or slide.

Now, using pencil, outline the area that need to be cut. We recommend using electric router, for it is needed to make a placement for the hinges, only deep as a thickness of metal of which hinges are made. Cut out slowly, and do your best not to make a mistake. In this phase it is still possible to give out a finishing touch. Use fine sandpaper to correct any bumps or irregularities. Pay attention to the edges; for you must soften it, in order to look nice.

Now, when done with this, proceed to making holes for the door knob and locking mechanism, after you put the door back. Measure and mark carefully at those points where holes needs to be drilled out. Drill bigger ones first, on the sides, for it is a placement for the knob. Use door-lock installation kits to make it easier, and large hole saw to make matching holes.

When finished with drilling, make a mark on the frame where the door-jamb will be. Be very careful here, for the height and depth must match perfectly, so you don’t want to make a mistake. If the height is not matching, the doors won’t be able to close, or you will have trouble later. By using simple chisel, make a ledge where the door jamb will go through. Try to close the door. If everything fits perfectly, proceed with mounting the mechanism. If not, however, make corrections with sandpaper. Mount the doorknob and screw it tightly. Try not to over-tighten the bolts, just to keep the mechanism in place.

Finishing

If everything went by the book so far, you have a few more things to do. If the doors aren’t painted, do so now. Also, clean up possible debris or dust, which could fall anywhere during the process. Try out if the mechanism is working, and everything fits perfectly. If needed, perform corrections, and finish the job.

With everything said considered, replacing doors isn’t such a hard work. Expect difficulties for the first few times, but you will make it eventually. The whole process will require about an afternoon, but if you take some quality tools, this time should be even shorter. In addition, there are many online tools shops that provide quality service, with the shortest possible delivery time, so why not to buy it online?
