Ramp Up Your Living Space
Are you tired of the drab look in your living room? Do you not feel relaxed or comfortable in your own space? Maybe you’ve just moved or landed a job that will allow you the financial freedom to finally discard the hand me down furniture you’ve been carrying around for years. WE tend to accumulate hand me downs from friends and relatives that we take to our dorm rooms and seem to move with us throughout our 20’s. Whatever your motivation, follow these tips from the experts for redesigning your space for a welcoming and total Zen look. With proper planning you won’t need to break the bank! Get ready and take the plunge.
The first step is to completely empty out the space of furniture, clutter, carpets and wall art. Envisioning a look and style is much easier when you start with a blank slate. Begin by selecting a soft color that will complement the adjacent rooms that are within eye sight. Patch and sand any holes in the wall in preparation for painting otherwise you will have unsightly bumps and blotches after you finish. Using a roller will be the fastest technique and will not leave brush marks, provided you move in a smooth up and down fashion. Lastly, consider touching up the woodwork, baseboards, and window trim with a fresh high gloss white paint. It will help bring out the base colors you used on your walls and just make everything else look that much crisper.
When the painting has been completed, identify the focal point of the room. This could be the fireplace, a large picture window or even a large TV and stand. Arrange the large pieces of furniture in a conversational u-shape directed towards this focal point. Limit the number of additional small occasional pieces of furniture in the room. Too much furniture will shrink the size of the room and interrupt traffic patterns. Consider adding new throw pillows to brighten up a couch. Limit the amount of tabletop accessories and wall art. Accessories should be grouped in threes of complementing sizes and shapes. Resist the temptation to display all of your treasured accessories at once. Consider instead, rotating them throughout the year.
Wall art should be placed at eye level. The center of the painting or photograph should be approximately five and a half feet from the floor. Instead of spreading pictures throughout the room, consider displaying them in clusters for a more inviting look. Clustering paintings, pictures, and wall art helps to create a seamless look that appears to be more organized and thoughtful.
